SpecSeal® SSP Putty & Putty Pads – Non-Hardening Intumescent Compound System

SpecSeal® SSP Putty & Putty Pads are non-hardening intumescent compounds designed to seal through-penetrations and membrane penetrations against fire, smoke, and hot gases. Ready-to-install by hand packing with no tools required, this soft and pliable putty expands up to eight times its original size when exposed to high temperatures, while the convenient putty pads provide release-lined application for electrical boxes and other penetrants.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Non-hardening formula – enables easy retrofit and cable modifications without damage
  • Endothermic fillers – absorb heat and release water for enhanced fire protection
  • Highly adhesive formula – stays put while allowing movement from settling and vibration
  • Soft and pliable – easy hand installation with no special tools required
  • Water-resistant – no water-soluble expansion ingredients for long-term durability
  • Excellent sound attenuation – STC rating of 62 for noise transmission reduction
  • Zero VOC content – environmentally safe with 0 g/L volatile organic compounds
  • 100% solids content – no shrinkage or separation for permanent sealing
  • Two-stage intumescent – expansion begins at 230°F (110°C) with >500% volume increase
  • No shelf life limit – indefinite storage capability for inventory flexibility

Product Range & Applications

SpecSeal® SSP Putty Bars

  • Through-penetrations – seal gaps around pipes, cables, and conduits
  • Construction gaps – fill voids and blank openings in fire-rated assemblies
  • Membrane penetrations – med-gas valve boxes, tub/shower valves, clean-out tees
  • Retrofit applications – easy cable additions without removing existing firestop
  • Hand-packable – soft compound molds around irregular shapes and penetrants

SpecSeal® SSP Putty Pads

  • Electrical box sealing – reduce sound transmission and increase fire resistance
  • Wall opening protection – certified for metallic and non-metallic outlet/switch boxes
  • Metered application – pre-sized pads eliminate guesswork and waste
  • Movement cushioning – accommodate settling, expansion, contraction, and vibration
  • Release-lined – poly liner on both sides for clean, mess-free application

Installation & Safety Guidelines

Installation Methods

  • Hand packing – soft putty molds easily around penetrants
  • No tools required – simple installation reduces labor time
  • Putty pad application – remove poly liner and press into place
  • Aggressive adhesion – bonds to all common construction materials
  • Cable-safe formula – compatible with cable jacketing and plastic pipes

Safety & Cleanup

  • Waterless hand cleaner – recommended for hand cleaning
  • Soap application – work soap over skin contact areas before adding water
  • Immediate cleanup – remove excess material from surfaces immediately
  • Electrical safety – do not apply to exposed electrical conductors
  • Eye protection – avoid contact with eyes during application
